Jean-Pierre Mignard, le porte-parole de la Haute autorité des primaires (HAP),avait laissé entendre aux alentours de 17h30 que la barre des deux millions de votants pourrait déjà avoir été atteinte. Il avait également indiqué que «100.000 bulletins de vote avaient été réimprimés aujourd’hui (dimanche) à Paris», en raison de l’affluence dans les bureaux de vote de la capitale. «Aucun problème de mauvaise foi ou de corruption du scrutin» n’a été relevé dans les bureaux, avait-il précisé.

Les bureaux de vote, où les sympathisants de gauche étaient appelés aux urnes dans le cadre de la primaire pour désigner le ou la candidate du Parti socialiste à la présidentielle de 2012, avaient ouvert à 9h. Il s’agissait du premier tour d’une primaire dans laquelle étaient engagés six candidats: les socialistes Martine Aubry, François Hollande, Arnaud Montebourg, Ségolène Royal, Manuel Valls, ainsi que le radical de gauche Jean-Michel Baylet. Si aucun d’eux n’atteint la majorité absolue à l’issue du dépouillement, un second tour est prévu le 16 octobre.

Au total, près de 10.000 bureaux de vote étaient accessibles en France métropolitaine. Ils étaient pour la plupart placés dans des écoles, des mairies, des salles louées pour l’occasion, et même sous un barnum comme à Issy-les-Moulineaux (Hauts-de-Seine).

A Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, en Guyane, dans les Antilles, en Polynésie française ainsi que sur le continent américain, le vote avait déjà eu lieu samedi. A Mayotte (environ 200.000 habitants), le vote avait dû être annulé, un vaste mouvement de grève contre la vie chère laissant craindre des troubles à l’ordre public.

François Hollande, favori des sondages pour le premier tour, s’était dit «plein d’espoir» au moment de voter, dans son fief corrézien de Tulle où il est président du conseil général. «J’ai fait la campagne que je voulais faire c’est pourquoi je suis aujourd’hui sans regret», avait déclaré le candidat, costume sombre et cravate bleue, à son arrivée au centre de vote principal de Tulle. «Je suis plein d’espoir car je pense que cette procédure des primaires va nous permettre d’arriver très forts devant la droite et l’extrême droite après le 9 ou le 16 octobre», avait-il ajouté. Pour lui, «le scénario idéal serait qu’il y ait plus d’un million de votants et un ordre d’arrivée clair». François Hollande avait par ailleurs jugé «tout à fait anormal» que certains médias aient fait état de résultats du premier tour en provenance des bureaux ayant voté samedi, donnant Martine Aubry en tête. «Moi je connais d’autres résultats et je ne les donnerai pas», avait-il expliqué sur BFMTV.
